HOW-TOS

The useful part, in pictures.

A good idea should work in your actual home. Here are small moves you can see, borrow, and try.

FROM FAUST Try the small version first. Tape can rehearse the art; a planter can meet the deck before the herbs move in.

TRY IT BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Three small tests with a big payoff.

Each one gives you an answer you can use before the decision becomes expensive or hard to undo.

PAINT

Let the color meet the room.

Try: Put a sample or movable swatch near the furniture you have.

Check: Look in morning and evening light. The paint store has not met your windows.

ART

Give the wall a rehearsal.

Try: Mark the outline with tape suitable for your wall.

Check: Look from the doorway and your usual seat. Move the tape until the art feels connected to the room.

DECK GARDEN

Park it before you plant it.

Try: Place an empty raised planter where you think it belongs.

Check: Walk past it and check light and water access. Then choose herbs you will use.

IF YOU ARE WONDERING

Try it in your own space.

What if I am not ready to make a hole?

Tape an outline where the art might go, using tape suitable for your wall. Look from the doorway and your usual seat, then move the outline until it feels right.

How do I choose a paint color?

Test a sample in the actual room. Look at it in morning light and again in the evening before committing.

FOR TODAY

One small test to try. One thing Faust thinks earns its place.

ONE SMALL WAY TO TRY

How high should you hang art?

Start with the center near eye level, then adjust for the furniture below. Over a sofa or console, keep the gap close enough that the pieces feel connected. Mark the spot with painter’s tape first. Art should look like it belongs to the room, not like it is trying to escape the furniture.

FAUST RECOMMENDS

Test the position before a hole.

Ask someone to hold the piece or mark its outline with tape suitable for the wall. Look from the doorway and the seat you use most.

KEEP WANDERING

Something else might catch your eye.

Choose the idea you want to explore next. There is no wrong room to walk into.
